Jacques & Jessica van Zyl

Over a cup of Coffee whilst looking through all the gorgeous wedding photo's, Jessica told me all about their special day...and a Special day it truly was!

Jacques & Jessica van Zyl - 27 November 2010

How did you and Jacques meet?
Ours is a real “Love at First Sight”, or should I rather say, “Love with First Conversation” story. I was looking for some IT equipment. A friend of my Dad’s gave me Jacques’s number. I phoned him up and was already intrigued just by the sound of his voice. I made up reasons to phone him, just so I could hear his voice! When I went to pick up my things from him, I felt an immediate connection. I invited him for some drinks with friends that evening. And as fate would have it, all the friends cancelled that evening and we ended up having drinks and dinner alone. Not that we minded at all. From then onwards we were inseparable!

How did Jacques propose?
For an IT wiz, Jacques is a real romantic! It was a Saturday morning. Jacques said that he had to go to the office and pick up a few things and asked if I wanted to come along, and maybe get something to eat on our way. This was not unusual at all. Thus, suspecting nothing at all, I went along. At the office, he went straight to the kitchen, and started getting Woolies goodies out of the refrigerator. I was very suspicious then. He clearly planned this very well, as all the pick nick gear was also in place. He explained that he just felt like spoiling me a bit, and if I would like to go on a pick nick with him.  He took me to Oliewenhuis. We had a lovely time, drinking wine and eating snacks, chatting and laughing away on the never ending green lawns and trees whispering softly above our heads. Then, unexpectedly, he popped out a ring, and asked me if I would be his wife. It was the best feeling in the whole world! We would never forget that moment! The rest is history.

What was special about your wedding and what would you remember always?
Jacques, loving all things aviation, had arranged for me to be flown to the venue by a helicopter. To see the world from up in the air, with an excitement about me and seeing Jacques there waiting for me, knowing we would soon be together for always, was just an amazing experience. We both also will never forget the moment when our eyes met for the first time as I was walking into the chapel. It was as if it was the first time we met, falling in love all over again. It was wonderful. The joy and happiness shared by us, friends and family on our special day, is a feeling we both will cherish forever.

Any advice you would give to other brides-to-be?
The venue we chose was magical. However, my advice would be to consider carefully what you as a couple want for you big day. Also, not only consider your financial budget, but also your “time budget”. Consider if you are a person who would rather tend to all the arrangement yourself. Or, if you do not have the time or patience for making all the arrangement that go along with such a momentous occasion, keep in mind that there are some venues that do offer to arrange for almost everything except your outfits. Also consider what type of photos you would like of your big day. Choose your venue and photographer with this in mind. And lastly, make the day your own to enjoy and share together.

Did anything unexpected happen?
Something no one expected, especially not the guys. During the throwing of the garter, Jacques decided to trick the guys and throw a “dummy” garter first, which was a pink and black g-string.
The guys fought for it, thinking it was the real garter, almost missing the throwing of the “real deal”. We still laugh about it today.
